Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Professional development is the stepchild of the arts world. There is never enough time or money for arts administrators to dedicate to personal professional development. In fact, some art administrators have wondered whether personal professional development might not be perceived as 'selfish' or 'egocentric.' On the contrary.

  • To put energy into exploring your potential
  • To give voice to that personal passion
  • To honour your gifts …

will give back ten-fold to your colleagues, your members and your community. Through this personal work you will speak more authoritatively, you will work at a deeper level, and your example will inspire others.

Based on work in the UK (www.museumsassociation.org), Ottie Lockey has developed a model CPD which is short, sweet, easy to deliver and suitable for conditions in the Canadian arts world. Basically, there are three ways to access and experience CPD: individual executive coaching with an experienced professional, peer coaching, and do it yourself.

Ottie's model of CPD is based on the assumption that professional development is a lifelong process. Her simple model uses a three-question template. See left side bar for the PDF downloads. How to make use of these questions is the important part of the CPD story. Professional Development is a process rather than a destination. The journey through these questions constitutes the essence of what CPD delivers.

Executive Coaching

Ottie Lockey has been working with clients in Canada and Europe as an Executive Coach since 2000, a process which is gradually becoming better understood in the arts world. As in the private sector, senior artistic and administrative directors now avail themselves of this one-on-one experience. Many people use executive coaching as a means to explore new directions or to better integrate and balance work and life. Executive coaching with an experienced coach often takes place as a sixty-minute session in person or by phone every two or three weeks for a period of months.

Ottie uses CPD as a methodology during coaching sessions. While executive coaching is usually helpful, it is restricted to those who can afford the cost of individual attention.

Peer Coaching

Since executive coaching is a rather limited option, Ottie decided to develop a more accessible model based on peer coaching. After several years of research and experimentation in conjunction with Toronto Dance Theatre and York University, Ottie Lockey has been delivering Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Peer Coaching workshops throughout Canada, most frequently in association with the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT).

Under the guidance of a CPD facilitator peer coaching is conducted in pairs, each partner taking a turn as coach and thinker. Thus within a one day workshop participants can learn peer coaching techniques, develop their own CPD and expand their professional skills and networks.
